Our Beautiful Flag
An offshoot of Flag Day (June 14th), National Flag Week encompasses a week long observance which celebrates the creation of our flag. In 1777 the Continental Congress approved use of the Stars & Stripes as a unifying banner for the American troops.
While Flag Day has been celebrated unofficially since its first use, in 1949 Harry Truman approved Flag Day & National Flag Week. Unlike many of the other holidays, the sitting president plays a part in forming celebratory flavor by making a proclamation declaring the observance.
This is one holiday that is really easy to celebrate. Fly your flag! If you don’t have a flag, draw, paint or even print one. It’s a fun way to get the children involved & teach them about our flag’s history. Don’t forget to brush up on your flag etiquette & show her the respect she deserves.
